home Draft, Magic February Cube thoughts

February Cube thoughts

1. Red is still very underdrafted.

Here are the unpicked cards from the last 2 drafts:

White (4)
Mardu Woe-Reaper
Knight of the White Orchid
Archetype of Courage
Unexpectedly Absent

Blue (1)
Gifts Given

Black (5)
Diregraf Ghoul
Vampire Hexmage
Master of the Feast
Disciple of Bolas

Red (14)
Hellspark Elemental
Keldon Marauders
Torch Fiend
Prophetic Flamespeaker
Ember Swallower
Siege-Gang Commander
Brimstone Volley
Acidic Soil
Rift Bolt
Stone Rain
Devil’s Play
Madcap Skills

Green (2)
Avacyn’s Pilgrim
Wild Nacatl

Multicolor (4)
Rakdos (1)
Rakdos Shred-Freak
Gruul (2)
Kird Ape
Boggart Ram-Gang
Izzet (1)
Nivmagus Elemental

My takeaway is that red is all “mindless aggro” and people don’t apparently want to play a deck in cube that they could play at FNM. In a multi-color heavy cube, the only 4 gold cards that were last picked in 2 drafts are heavy ago. (2 of the best, kird ape and Wild Nacatl at that.)

Of these, Rift Bolt, Ember Swallower, and Stone Rain were last picked twice.

I’m not quite ready to pull the trigger, but I guess I’ll start looking for themes to replace red aggro.
I’m tempted to force it myself at the next draft and show its power, but I don’t want to skew the numbers either. /sigh

One possible replacement theme would be storm. (Heavy red, spilling into blue and black.)

2. The following cards were in my testing spots, does any one have any feedback on these cards in particular?

White (3)
Soulfire Grand Master
Monastery Mentor
Wingmate Roc

Blue (3)
Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest
Clever Impersonator
Supplant Form

Black (6)
Mardu Strike Leader
Merciless Executioner
Brutal Hordechief
Tasigur, the Golden Fang
Murderous Cut
Crux of Fate

Red (4)
War-Name Aspirant
Alesha, Who Smiles at Death
Shaman of the Great Hunt
Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker

Green (4)
Warden of the First Tree
Rattleclaw Mystic
Yasova Dragonclaw
Whisperwood Elemental

Simic (1)
Sagu Mauler

Colorless (1)
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

My instinct is that Warden of the First Tree, Rattleclaw Mystic, Ugin, Alesha, Murderous Cut, and Tasigur are all good enough to be “in” and no longer in the testing slots.
