Draft-by-draft with Ian

Pack 1 pick 1:

Ian’s Pick:

  • Trek: experts will say not to pick gold cards early. You gain raw power at the cost of staying open and risking wasting a pick on colors that end up not being open.   The alternative is to take it and force at least one of the two colors by not letting anything else good go past you. In this case, not only does Atarka demand two colors, he demands a ramp strategy.
  • Let’s look at what you are passing. If you want to go RG ramp, the other powerful cards are reanimate, vampire nighthawk and sun titan.  If you take Sun Titan, the downside is that it costs WW and can’t be splashed.   If you take either black card, you’re going to be fighting for it in pack 2.
  • The upside is none of the red or green you are passing is likely to pull a player into green, although the Llanowar elf would be nice for your deck.

Pack 1 pick 2:

Ian’s Pick:

  • This is a solid followup.  I might have been very tempted to go for Lotus, but I think this is actually the right choice as leaving the elf would send a strong signal that green was open.   Unburial rites should be enough to make sure that some one to your left is in reanimator.

Pack 1 pick 3:

Ian’s Pick:

  • Here’s one I don’t like. Even though they are technically red, they are more for the RU artifact deck.  If you had taken the lotus last pick, then you could plan on flinging it for the win.
  • Lightning Bolt would have been my choice with Farseek a close second.
  • Passing bolt strongly signals red being open.

Pack 1 pick 4:

Ian’s Pick:

  • Or, ya know just make red artifacts work.

Pack 1 pick 5:

Ian’s Pick:

  • I agree with this one. It plays very nice with Pia.  Reanimate then fling it at end of turn.  At this point *I* would probably switch to RU, keep Dragonlord, and loot him to the yard, reanimate with Feldon for all the damage.   Then, since it’s magical Christmas land I crack my black lotus and cast all three ancestral visions that Frank passes me in pack 2.

Pack 2 pick 1:

Ian’s Pick:

  • I… Fully agree.  Not only is she on color and high power, but even if you wanted a red card it would likely wheel.

Pack 2 pick 2:

Ian’s Pick:

  • I really wanted to tell you that you shouldn’t take pet cards when they don’t totally fit your deck.  But the pack didn’t have much else.

Pack 2 pick 6:

Ian’s Pick:

  • Marath might have been interesting but this was the right choice.

Pack 2 pick 7:

Ian’s Pick:

  1. Alesha works best with an aggressive red deck with enter the battlefield effects. I would have taken beast within.

Pack 2 pick 8:

Pack 2 pick 9:

Ian’s Pick:

  • While I don’t think this was a bad choice, I might have done land or rift bolt to solidify a burn deck.

Pack 2 pick 10:

Ian’s Pick:

  • If GR ramp, this is right choice. If burn, wheel is best.

Pack 3 pick 1:

Ian’s Pick:

  • Oblivion sower would also be solod in ramping you from 6 to 8.
  • If you had switched to Aggro then lightning strike and get the heel cutter on the wheel.

Pack 3 pick 2:

Ian’s Pick:

  • 100 % correct choice. But I think the confluence would have been better for you then me.

Pack 3 pick 3:

Ian’s Pick:

  • Solid pick, be happy for either the fetch or Polukranous to wheel.

Pack 3 pick 4:

Ian’s Pick:

  • Rattleclaw mystic is the choice here I think. It can ramp you 2 mana once when it flips. Bane of Bala Ged would also be good.
